Big Island Brewhaus – Waimea (Kamuela)

Where: 64-1066 Mamalahoa Highway, Waimea (Kamuela) (east of Keck Observatory Administrative offices and across the street from Ippy’s Hawaiian BBQ). If the parking lot is full, you are allowed to park on the other side of the church in the grassy area next door. Call: (808) 887-1717 Website: http://bigislandbrewhaus.com/ Open DAILY from 12 – 8:00 p.m. Review: The brewery/restaurant gets crowded, so keep this in mind that lunch time may be the best time to bring in your pup.  Dogs are allowed on the lanai, which CAN get very chilly, breezy, and rainy, so be prepared.  Please keep your brew pup leashed and tucked in by your table out of the pathway.  The servers LOVE dogs and will most likely bring your dog a water bowl, but as always, please bring your own just in case they are busy.  Excellent food with a focus on locally-grown vegetables, meats, and seafood.  Lots of choices including Mexican food, salads, vegetarian, gluten-free, steak, and fantastic locally-brewed beer on tap.  You won’t see...

Volcano Winery

Volcano Winery

***December 2020 Update: Friendly, leashed pups are still allowed at Volcano Winery, but must remain OUTSIDE in their newer outdoor seating area. Still a wonderful place to take your dogs and enjoy some of their wine and charcuterie plate. ***April 2017 Update: I was contacted by one of our viewers who said someone arrived at the Winery with five dogs who were not under control and who chased the cats who reside on the property.  I confirmed with the Winery owners on July 8, 2017 that the Winery still allows friendly, leashed dogs, but as always, please be extremely considerate and grateful (I tip 30 to 50% any time a place accommodates me and my dog)…Call ahead or at least leave your dog outside and check with management first before arriving with your dog and ask if there’s an area that would be best for you and your pup.  Incidents like this give responsible dog owners a bad image.  This is something we are working hard to change on...

My Furry Valentine 2019

Despite the wind and rain, we had a successful My Furry Valentine at The Shops at Mauna Lani on February 10, 2019!  We raised over $500 for Hawaii Island Humane Society and Aloha Ilio Rescue. We had 16 vendors selling items or services for dogs and dog lovers as well as food vendors and a dog-friendly beer garden sponsored by Big Island Brewhaus.  There was something for everyone! 22 entries in the Valentine theme canine costume contest to win prizes from Mokulele Airlines, Sushi Shiono, and Keri Nakahashi Photography!  Miss Hawaii Collegiate 2019 Kyra Alcoran emceed the costume contest. While we tallied the votes for the costume contest, Dawn Goehring of Animal Biz Behavior and Training and Debbie Lewis of Petamorphosis put on an interactive show on “Why Does My Dog Do That?” Keri Nakahashi Photography took kissing booth photos to benefit Hawaii Island Humane Society and Aloha Ilio Rescue Adoptable dogs were available from Hawaii Island Humane Society and Aloha Ilio Rescue.  All but two dogs were adopted...

Fee: Refundable $100 deposit per room.  Daily fee of $35 per dog. Review and photos by our friends at Aloha Pups: “The Lotus is amazing! It is located at the quieter end of the Waikiki strip, about one block from the Waikiki Aquarium. There is a dog-friendly park (Kapiolani Park) across the street and beach access behind the hotel. They also leave a cute doggie basket (filled with treats, blanket, water bowl, and toys) in the room upon arrival. This is definitely our go-to place for staycations.  They also have a complimentary daily wine hour in the lobby for humans to enjoy.  Dogs are allowed everywhere in the hotel except in the restaurant.  There is a side entrance for access to the park. Staff is SUPER friendly and always greeted the dogs when we left/returned...

Lucky we live Hawaii, eh?  But where do we take our dogs for hiking, playing at the beach, or strolling in a park? Most beaches and trails on Maui allow dogs unless specified otherwise. We are currently researching EVERY island and adding places as we learn about them.  If you know of dog-friendly places you’d like to share with us, please drop us an email at rhonda@lavadogshawaii.com. ...
